Description: During 1996, major dome-collapse pyroclastic flows were all channelled to the east of the lava dome down the Tar River valley. The pyroclastic flows first reached the coast on 12th May and their deposits built up to form a delta. When a pyroclastic flow reaches the sea it is believed that the basal avalanche of lava blocks flows along the sea bed whereas the overlying pyroclastic surge (composed of volcanic ash and gas) speeds across the surface of the sea. The ongoing eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano has devastated much of the small Caribbean island of Montserrat. The eruption of the lava dome-building volcano began in 1995 and volcanic hazards have included pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic surges, vulcanian explosions, lateral blasts, ash clouds and lahars.
