| Description: | The torrential seasonal rains in Montserrat trigger extensive floods of mud and rocks (lahars) which have had a devastating effect on Plymouth, shown here in February 1998 (clocktower is bottom left). The river valley that used to flow through the centre of Plymouth rapidly filled up with mud so subsequent lahars spread across the town. On 20-21st September 1998, Montserrat was hit by Hurricane Georges and the sustained and heavy rainfall triggered numerous lahars. By March 2004 most of Plymouth, including the clocktower was completely buried in mud. The ongoing eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano has devastated much of the small Caribbean island of Montserrat. The eruption of the lava dome-building volcano began in 1995 and volcanic hazards have included pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic surges, vulcanian explosions, lateral blasts, ash clouds and lahars. |
