| Description: | A major dome-collapse pyroclastic flow on 21st September 1997 destroyed the airport terminal buildings and reached the sea just south of the runway. Boiling seawater at the edge of the pyroclastic flow deposits formed steaming fumaroles and occasional secondary explosions (grey ash cloud right of centre). The airport was evacuated for the second and last time on 25th June 1997. A new ferry service to Antigua began from an emergency jetty in the north of the island. Speculation that the airport might reopen was ended after the 21st September 1997 pyroclastic flows. Plans to build a new airport in the north of the island were discontinued in 1998. The ongoing eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano has devastated much of the small Caribbean island of Montserrat. The eruption of the lava dome-building volcano began in 1995 and volcanic hazards have included pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic surges, vulcanian explosions, lateral blasts, ash clouds and lahars. |
