Caption: Iceland, Blaa Jonid (Blue Lagoon).
Description: Blue Lagoon near Grindavik stands upon the spreading centre rift in the southwest of the island. Here post glacial (both pre and post 1100 years), basic and intermediate lavas form a wide plain surrounding upper Pleistocene volcanic cones made up of basic and intermediate hyalocatitic and pillow lavas. In general the individual post glacial flows show a vesicular basalt core with a superficial surface unit. In places this klinker material is reincorporated into the flow as they move.View of typical moss and lichen vegetation with very poor thin soil over these young lavas.
