Caption: | Iceland, Dettifoss area. |
Description: | View of retreating gorge below main Dettifoss falls. Upper Pleistocene (mainly columnar) c. 0.8 myrs old basic lava flows cut through by Jokulsa a Fjollum River (this is Icelands second largest river, derives most of its waters from glacial meltwaters and is grey in colour because of the huge volumes of rock flour, black sand grade basaltic material and fines). Gorge may well have been created or enhanced by Jokullaup (glacier burst) events. |
