Caption: Processing of Scottish mica. Pitlochry Depot (January 1945). Perthshire.
Description: A single box of processed mica being carefully packed. One of the sorting boxes lies alongside. The principal factors which determine the quality of a block of mica are clearness, hardness and flatness. Air spots, mineral vegetable spots and lines, softness and wavyness reduce the electrical and/or mechanical strength of the mica. Packing graded sheet mica for despatch at the Sorting Factory. After packing the boxes were dispatched to London. Each packing case contained about 50 lbs. of mica packed in layers with the edges overlapping to prevent damage in transit.
