Description: Stankards Bing. West Lothian. A close-up view of spent oil-shale, the material that forms the bings. The freshly mined raw oil-shales were heated in retorts to produce shale-oil for distillation and other uses. The waste product of the process was the red spent oil-shale fragments seen in the photograph. They contrast with the less altered black oil-shale.
