Description: | Culbin sand-hills. Morayshire. Wind-rippled surface of blown sand. The direction of sand-drift is obliquely from left to right i.e. from west to east. The photograph shows straight ripples developing into curved ripples higher up the slope. A variety of wind-rippled surfaces can form due to variations in slope, direction of the wind across the surface, the strength of the wind and the grain sizes of the sand. The central tract is surrounded by dunes from 10-30 feet high. Some are crescentic like barchans, some are conical while some appear as well-marked ridges trending in an east-north-east direction. |
