| Description: | The Ballater Granite consists of a pink, medium- to coarse-grained, locally porphyritic granite. This grades into the eastern end of the granite which is very coarse-grained (2 cm. groundmass) with up to 5 cm. phenocrysts of potassium-feldspar. The Ballater Granite forms part of the Cairngorm suite of igneous plutonic bodies that extend from the Monadhliath pluton in Strathspey to Peterhead. Craigendarroch (Hill of the Oaks), Ballater and Craig Corllich, the opposite wooded hill are all underlain by the south-west part of the Ballater Granite. The hills to the right are part of the Argyll Group of the Dalradian Supergroup. |
