| Description: | The stoop and room workings are the remains of former underground mining that have become exposed during the current opencast workings. After driving two sets of narrow roadways at right angles to each other, the seam is thus divided into a large number of square or rectangular pillars of coal. This method is common where the seams are of sufficient thickness. Stoop and room is a Scottish term for this type of mining. Elsewhere it is variously known as pillar and stall or bord and pillar; many variations of this method of working are known, again each with different regional names. A variety of extraction equipment is seen in the background including a back-hoe hydraulic excavator, a dump truck, Land Rover and what appears to be a scraper. |
