Description: | Allan Water, 0.5 km. north of Kinbuck, Perthshire. Meandering river. The Allan Water here seen meandering across an alluvial plain, upstream from an area of gravel mounds. Over time, the river will eventually work its way across the whole width of the flood plain, in the process re-working older deposits of alluvium. As part of this process, the tight meander in the centre of the photograph could well become cut off and abandoned if the river should cut a channel across the neck while swollen after heavy rains or snow-melt. This would lead to the creation of a classic ox-bow lake in the abandoned meander. |
