| Description: | Portland Stone has been quarried in the Isle of Portland since at least Norman times. However, It was not until the 17th century that it was exported further afield, most notably to London. In 19th century it was used, with the exception of the new Palace of Westminster, for almost all major public buildings in London. One of the principal attributes of Portland Stone that has made it such a success is the ease with which it can be worked. It is one of the United Kingdom's pre-emminent freestones and is commonly chosen by masons, sculptors and architects where intricately carved stone work is a necessary part of the building project. Quarrying in the Isle of Portland was for some considerable time in the hands of the crown and its agents. However, the right to work in the quarries was only vested in the 'islanders' i.e. anyone born in the island. |
