Description: The yellow-brown, dolomitic limestones (or magnesian limestones) from Linby Quarry have been extensively used for local building since at least medieval times. The hard, coarsely crystalline limestone only occurs in thin beds and does not, therefore, produce a good freestone but is commonly used as a walling stone in Nottingham and its suburbs. The Cadeby Formation (Lower Magnesian Limestone) succession in the quarry comprises a series of thinly-bedded limestones. The stone is relatively easily raised by the use of crowbars and picks. The quarry, which is still in operation (2004), produces walling stones, paving flags and window-sills. In the past the limestone was also burnt for lime. The Lower Magnesian Limestone (Cadeby Formation) is an important source of building stone in the North Nottinghamshire-South Yorkshire area. In the past a large number of quarries produced the stone for building purposes. The Linby Stone is a coarsely crystalline dolomitic limestone.
