Caption: | The Malvern Hills from Midsummer Hill, Herefordshire. |
Description: | View looking north-north-east from a viewpoint at the north end of Midsummer Hill, Malvern Hills. The quarry is Gullet Quarry, excavated in Malvernian rocks of Precambrian age, which also form the ridge extending upwards from the apex of the quarry to the summit of Swinyard Hill. The Malvernian rocks are flanked by May Hill Sandstone of Silurian age forming wooded country to the left and a marked slope descending to the Trias plain to the right of the summit ridge. Faults separate Malvernian from Silurian and Silurian from Trias. The southern shoulder of Herefordshire Beacon is visible in the left middle distance with Worcestershire Beacon just appearing in the distance in the left centre of the picture. The Malvernian rocks are Precambrian in age and are composed of gneisses and schists. They form the prominent ridge running north to south some 8 miles (13 kilometres) long. They are considered to be some of the oldest in the Welsh Borderlands. |
