Caption: A fossil specimen of Alethopteris lonchitica Schlotheim. A fossil plant. (Plantae.) Foxley, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Description: Alethopteris lonchitica, a pteridosperm or seed fern had pinnules high in pinna or leaflets. These are biconvex, squat and reasonably symmetrical about the mid-vein. This specimen is from the Upper Carboniferous at Foxley near Airdrie in Lanarkshire. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 4738. Alethopteris had very large fronds up to seven metres long and along with Neuopteris, they formed an important part of the Upper Carboniferous Coal Measures flora. During the Carboniferous many new groups of plants evolved and great forests grew in the tropical swamps and deltas and in a landscape dominated by extensive volcanic activity. Plants have grown in Britain for 420 million years, the earliest plants have been found in the Devonian of Wales and Scotland with a vast increase in plants in the Carboniferous, Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous.
