Caption: A fossil specimen of Trigonocarpus parkinsoni Brongniart. A fossil plant. (Plantae.) Ardeer Quarry, Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Description: Trigonocarpus is the seed body of a pteridosperm (seed ferns) less than 25 mm long. Generally seed bodies are preserved detached from their parent plant. This example is from the Carboniferous Coal Measures from Ardeer Quarry, Ayr. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 4734. The higher vascular plants reproduce by seeds. Two types occur, the primitive gymnosperms where the reproductive organs form cones and the angiosperms which have flowers. The environment in Central Scotland during the Carboniferous was one of large forests with many active volcanoes and with explosive pyroclastic rocks such as volcanic ash periodically overwhelming the forests.
