Caption: | A fossil specimen of Crangopsis sp. A fossil crustacean. (Arthropoda, Crustacea.) Shore at Muirhouse, Granton, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. |
Description: | Crangopsis is a crustacean from the Upper Carboniferous swamps. These swamps tend to be poorly fossiliferous indicating a difficult environment due to fluctuating salinity levels with frequent marine incursions. This specimen is from the shore at Muirhouse, Granton, Edinburgh. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 13884. The body of Crangopsis was composed of nineteen segments and had three clearly identifiable regions, a head, thorax and abdomen. Eyes were carried on moveable stalks. Crangopsis is very similar to modern day deep-sea and open ocean forms such as Mysis. Familiar present-day forms of Crustacea include the crabs, lobsters and shrimps. Figd. Briggs & Clarkson 1983, Special Papers in Palaeontology 30, pl. 22, figs. 7 & 8, text figs. 5g, 5h. |
