Caption: | A fossil specimen of Chaetetes septosus Fleming. A fossil sponge. (Porifera.) Shore opposite Vaults 1 mile east of Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. |
Description: | Belonging to the phylum Porifera, (commonly known as sponges) the Chaetetes septosus skeleton consists of calcareous tubes without septa, but with spicules in the tube walls. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 6009. This specimen is from the Carboniferous Lower Limestone Group. Porifera are sessile aquatic animals with a very simple structure. The body is sac-shaped perforated by small pores and with a jelly-like substance between the inner and outer layers. This jelly secretes the organic, siliceous or calcareous spicules that form the skeleton of the animal. Until recently the taxonomic status of the Chaetetes was in doubt. Once thought to belong to the tabulate corals, it is now considered to be a calcareous sponge. |
