Caption: A fossil specimen of Holoptychius flemingi Agassiz. A fossil fish. (Vertebrata, Pisces.)
Description: Holoptychius flemingi is a large-headed, depressed form of the crossopterygians whose paired fins (especially the pectoral pair) are acutely lobate, and whose large, rounded, overlapping scales have a wrinkled ornamentation. The acutely conical teeth have a complex, meandering, folded structure which bears a striking resemblance to that in the teeth of the slightly later Labyrinthodont amphibians, the earliest crawling land animals. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 1242. In Scotland, Holoptychius flemingi can be found in the Upper Old Red Sandstone (Devonian) of Dura Den, Fife along with other species of fish such as Bothriolepis, Glyptopomus and Phyllolepis. Another family of crossopterygians are the Coelacanths, the so called 'living fossils' found in offshore southern Africa and Indonesia.
