Caption: A fossil specimen of Phillipsia eichwaldi. A fossil trilobite. (Arthropoda, Trilobita.) Lower Limestone Formation, Skolie Burn, Midlothian, Scotland.
Description: Phillipsia is an elongate form, the cephalon and pygidium are of almost equal size and it had large crescentic compound eyes. This specimen is from the Carboniferous Lower Limestone Formation at Skolie Burn. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 8674. The Phillipsia genus of trilobites is thought to be the ancestral type, or close to the type, from which most of the Carboniferous trilobites were derived. The family of proetids to which Phillipsia belongs ranged from the Ordovician to the Permian. During this time it developed only minor changes. Trilobites are the earliest known arthropods, they first appeared in the rocks of the Lower Cambrian and they died out in the Permian. Their geological history spans 350 million years.
