Caption: A fossil specimen of Littorina littoralis Linne. A fossil gastropod. (Mollusca, Gastropoda.) Barry Buddon No.1 Borehole, 8.0 m, Forfarshire, Scotland.
Description: Known as the `flat periwinkle? this small gastropod is common to all shores where brown seaweed occurs on British coasts. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 14027. It is mostly associated with fucoid algae from mid to lower tidal levels on rocky shores. It is tolerant of low salinities and a wide range of exposure. Up to 1.5 cms in height, it has a flattened spire and a large tear-drop shaped aperture. The shell appears smooth but is finely reticulate. It is highly variable in colour (from olive green to yellow to banded and chequered patterns) depending on habitat, with lighter shells being found on sheltered shores. This specimen is Flandrian in age and they are common to the present day. Figd. Armstrong, M., Paterson, I.B. and Browne, M.A.E.
