Description: | The common barnacle, Balanus is a member of the Cirripedia within the Crustacean Subphyllum. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 15094. The cirripedes (barnacles) are an aberrant group of Crustacea that have developed a sessile (fixed) mode of life. The animal lives, head down, in a shell consisting of six calcareous plates fixed securely to a calcareous base. Appendages (legs) attached to the abdomen are held in the water column, wafting/snaring organic particles which are guided to the mouth. This specimen is Devensian (Quaternary) in age. Figd.
