Caption: Rock specimen of sandstone. Quarry near Elgin, Elginshire, Scotland.
Description: The sample is a pale yellowish, medium to fine-grained, quartz-rich sandstone with a prominent patterned marking on the bedding surface. This probably represents part of the remains of a fossil fish, perhaps part of the scaly skin. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC1433. Many of the rocks around the Moray Firth coast near Elgin belong to the Old Red Sandstone rocks of Devonian age. These are famous for containing beds with fossil fish, representing periods in Devonian time where the sea flooded widely over the land. Fossil fish beds of the same age are present in Caithness and on Orkney. The sandstone around Elgin is of Upper Old Red Sandstone (Devonian) age. In general, the Upper Old Red Sandstone sediments were laid down as small alluvial fans and by braided rivers marginal to the alluvial plains and shallow lakes. Palaeocurrent indicators show an overall northerly flow from what were high mountains to the south. The Upper Old Red Sandstone are noted for a rich fish fauna.
