| Description: | The specimen consists of a complex intergrowth of bladed pink barite crystals, forming an intricate rosette. British Geological Survey Petrology Mineral Collection sample number 56?. Barite is a relatively common mineral in Scotland with a wide geographical distribution. It has been a significant economic mineral and was mined in several localities, most notably from the stratabound deposit near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, Strontian in Argyllshire, Eaglesham in Renfrewshire, Coalburn in Lanarkshire and Glen Sannox on the island of Arran. This specimen of barite vein material in trachyte was found in the lower (and southern) of two disused quarries at Phantassie Hill (at the east end of the quarry) to the north of the road 500 yards east of Phantassie. The trachytes form part of the Garleton Hills Volcanic Rocks a series of basal basaltic tuffs and lagoonal sediments, a series of ankaramite, basalt, hawaiite and mugearite flows and an upper group of thick trachyte flows and tuffs within the Carboniferous Calciferous Sandstone Measures. The locality is possibly in line with the vein of Garleton Hematite Mine to the north-west. |
