| Description: | Sample of Swinton sandstone from the building stone collection of the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust. The stone has a cut surface with a pale orange grey colour. Edinburgh World Heritage Trust sample no. EWHT 61. The stone is a fine to medium-grained sandstone with warm greyish-yellow colour and distinctive speckled appearance caused by common white mica flakes and darker biotite mica. It is of Carboniferous age. The Swinton quarries were most active during the 19th century. Records show that in 1901 the Swinton Quarry employed 11 men. The quarry had disappeared from the official Quarry List by 1920. |
