Caption: Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat, West Indies.
Description: The Tar River Estate House at 06:00 local time on 18th September 1996 following the major dome collapse pyroclastic flows on 17th September. Volcanic ash is blowing over the pyroclastic flow deposits on the valley floor behind the house. This was the first house destroyed by the volcano. During the dome collapse, a pyroclastic surge detached from one of the major pyroclastic flows and swept up and over the side of the Tar River valley destroying the house and all surrounding vegetation. The ongoing eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano has devastated much of the small Caribbean island of Montserrat. The eruption of the lava dome-building volcano began in 1995 and volcanic hazards have included pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic surges, vulcanian explosions, lateral blasts, ash clouds and lahars.
