| Description: | A vulcanian explosion in October 1997 viewed from the north of the island. Explosions occurred regularly three or four times a day between 22nd September and 21st October 1997. The ash clouds rose to a height of up to 15 km. and ash was dispersed across the north-east Caribbean. Volcanic ash is a hazard to aircraft so the Montserrat Volcano Observatory issues warnings to air traffic controllers across the region when a large ash cloud is produced. Normally, the wind would blow the ash cloud to the west over Plymouth and across the sea but sometimes the wind direction changed and the north of the island would be showered with volcanic ash. The ongoing eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano has devastated much of the small Caribbean island of Montserrat. The eruption of the lava dome-building volcano began in 1995 and volcanic hazards have included pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic surges, vulcanian explosions, lateral blasts, ash clouds and lahars. |
